WEEKLY UPDATES: A READ-A-THON & MORE

PicMonkey Collage-NEW CURL UP LOGO

Good morning! Today’s post will link up to The Sunday Salon, The Sunday Post and Stacking the Shelves, for weekly updates.

**Mailbox Monday is hosted at the home site: Mailbox Monday.

And let’s join Kathryn, our leader in It’s Monday! What Are You Reading?, at Book Date.

It has been a good week for reading, and today I’ve joined in for Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon.  I started out fairly late this morning, around 7:30 a.m., and I’ve been going at it pretty steadily.  I’ve taken some breaks to blog and visit sites, have snacks, and even some dinner.  My original plan was to read two or three small books, but instead, I started on one with 454 pages…and kept going with it because I love it.  I should be finished soon.

I haven’t done a lot of movie watching this week, and nothing on Netflix.  Usually that’s a weekend thing, but now I’ve got the reading thing going on.  Here’s my reading with dinner.

  1. Happy readathon, hope it’s going well! I haven’t watched much Netflix either this week.

June looks good, I like the back and forth angle in that one between the present and the past. And I hope The Obsession turns out well too. 🙂

  2. Thanks, Greg, I am almost finished with The Obsession, and I’m loving it. But I had to take a break to charge my Kindle on the computer, as my wall charger quit working, and I haven’t figured out how to read on it while charging on the computer. This is my second one that’s gone on the fritz! I should buy a package of them….

    Enjoy your week!

    1. Ha- good one, Samantha….this was my first one, and maybe I’m just not disciplined enough, as I kept looking longingly at the TV…as weekends are for movies, too. But I did make great headway, and the book I read was awesome. Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

    1. I’m within a few pages of finishing….and it was hard to sit and do nothing but read all day. I did manage some breaks….but otherwise, not that different from ordinary weekends…except no movies or Netflix! Sigh. Thanks for stopping by, Hayley, and enjoy your week.

      1. I always think readathons would be like a normal 24 hours for me too because I read so much but it’s just the idea of doing nothing else at all in order to read that would be a little strange. I bet it’s fun to do once in a while though. Maybe I’ll try and join in with the next one. Well done on getting through to the end of yours. Hope you have a great week too! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Molly, I love my Apple! Before I got it, I used Desert Rose for many years. It’s funny to see each of these designs in movies occasionally. I’ve also seen them in antique stores. Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting.

      1. Many thanks, Laurel – I will:). FYI – don’t bother with those sprays you mist onto closed eyelids, they are a waste of time. But I do regularly use eye drops for dry eyes when I’ve been overdoing the reading and editing and I find they bring great relief!

  3. I hope you had a lovely readathon! Any day where you can spend most of the day reading is a good one in my book. I’m very eager to read The Obsession, but alas, I was #37 in line for a copy so it will be a while. Luckily, the library system added more copies, so there are now 16 in circulation.

Have a good week, and enjoy your books!

    1. Thanks, Mary, and while it helped keep me going, I prefer to mix up reading with my movie watching on the weekends…LOL. I probably won’t do another readathon any time soon! Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

  4. Glad you had a good readathon. I dipped in and out too but this time I was less social and just spent more time reading. And I’m glad I did as I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the books I read 🙂 Everyone is raving about The Obsession! I am dying to read it.

    1. Thanks, Carol, I really loved having my dinner with my book and a glass of wine at my dining room table. I usually eat at the coffee table while watching a show or a movie. Nice break.

Thanks for stopping by…enjoy your week!

  5. Isn’t it wonderful to just be able to read and read and read! I wish I could have participated in the readathon, but I was working. I did manage a few uninterupted hours reading The Nest and am totally immersed.

I have The Obsession waiting for me… I’m glad you are enjoying it!

Thanks for sharing all the great books and have a great week! Here’s my The Sunday Salon

    1. Thanks, JoAnn…while I love to read a lot, I don’t think I’ll commit to it again, I really miss being able to mix things up on the weekend: movies, outings, etc. I did enjoy reading The Obsession all the way through. Have a great week!

  6. I’ve never participated like that in a readathon, but it would get through some reading for sure, as you did. Great accomplishment. Like the look of all your books and of course will be back to read the reviews to see if I should add them to my groaning shelves!

    1. I didn’t choose my books very well this week, so I probably won’t end up reading the ones I listed….except I finished The Obsession, of course. I set aside a couple of the e-books as they didn’t engage me…at all.

Then I had problems with my Kindle charger…the trouble with having an Amazon device, you have to wait until one arrives by mail (tomorrow was the earliest).

Then, on a whim, I tried an old charger that had quit a while ago…and it worked! That puzzles me, but I’m glad to be fully charged again. So I guess I have at least one sort of iffy charger…and will have a new one tomorrow.

Thanks for visiting, Kathryn, and have a great week.

  7. Good luck on the read-a-thon, though I guess it’s almost over now! And so many posts last week! I recognise a few of the books on your newly-received pile Laurel so you’ll have a busy time ahead as well!

    1. I am more drawn to some of my newer books these days, although I have read some off the old TBRs, too. I am impatient with them, though; I have set aside more DNF books lately than ever before. Enjoy your week, Deborah.

  8. I can’t wait to read The Obsession! I’m #24 at the library so it might be a little while unless I somehow find it another way! Sounds like you did great at the readathon even though you didn’t stick with your original plan. Getting some great reading done is the whole point and it definitely sounds like you did that. Have a great week!

    1. I don’t know if I’ll do it again, Diane, as I felt a bit trapped. I like mixing up my activities on the weekends…and even during the week. Just reading can be hard on the eyes…LOL.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

  9. The Emily Giffin book looks good – I still couldn’t get myself to read e-books. Really am old fashioned that way, I suppose. I did try – I have a Kindle Fire, actually, but I really just don’t like reading on screen. But good to see how productive you are with it! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Myra, I agree about the Giffin book. My main pull toward the e-books is how easy it is to download them…and they don’t visibly take up much space. I still have lots of print books around me.

The downside to e-books for me is the constant charging I have to do! And then my chargers go out on me…which stalls my reading. I need to keep a Jumbo pack of them around…LOL.

  10. Oh, it’s been a while since I’ve had a readathon! I hope you had a great time!

I have another book of Fredrik Backman on my shelves, though I went for the French translation for this one. I heard a lot of good about this book too though!

Also : I love your coca-cola chairs! So lovely, perfect dinner spot 🙂

    1. I am really eager to read the Britt-Marie book by Backman…I don’t think these books are part of a series, but I decided to read them in order of publication. Thanks for stopping by, Kathy, and have a great week.

I love all the red on your dinner table. 🙂 My Grandmother .. looks intriguing. And everyone’s ravings about Obsession just landed that book on my wishlist. Have a great week and happy reading!

    1. Thanks, Elizabeth…I bought several Coca Cola pieces for my guesthouse when I lived in the foothills, so when I downsized to this condo, I thought they fit in perfectly. Better than the dining furniture I had up there.

I did finish The Obsession during the Read-a-Thon…even though I took a nap and slept some during the night. I couldn’t have managed a straight 24 hours. LOL.

    1. Thanks, Nise, I also love dinner with a book. Usually I do it at the coffee table…or out at a restaurant. It was a treat to sit at my dining table…LOL. Enjoy your week! I loved The Obsession.

  12. Did you make the whole readathon? I participated but only for part of the day. And then I fell asleep around midnight and couldn’t wake up again for the end. One of these days I’ll do the entire 24 hours!

    1. No, Leslie, I read fairly continuously, but then took a short nap. I took some short breaks, but I fell asleep around 10:30 p.m. Woke up around 1:30 a.m. and read until 3:00. Went back to sleep. So I guess I’m not much of a marathon reader…LOL.
